Japan's Isuien Garden Provides Peaceful Respite From Its Busiest Cities

The Isuien Garden is about 10 minutes walking distance west of the Nandaimon Gate of the Todai-ji temple and covers nearly 3 acres. The garden is a combination of front garden- built in 1670's by Kiyosumi Dosei and back garden - designed by Seki Tojiro in early 20th century. Both gardens have pathways around ponds.

A garden with two parts. Isuien Garden is a perfect example of the luxury enjoyed by the wealthy merchants in the Edo (1603-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. The larger part of the garden, which was constructed by a wealthy textile merchant, shows many popular features of the upper class, such as a private villa and teahouses.

Isuien Garden is a traditional Japanese-style garden that dates back to the Edo Period. It is said that the name "Isuien" means "garden founded on water", based on the fact that its ponds were watered by the nearby Yoshikigawa River.
