The Basilica of St Lorenz is a landmark of Kempten and towers over the city. It is considered to be the first large church building in southern Germany after the end of the Thirty Years' War and is now Kempten's Catholic parish church.

It was restored in the 1500s by Martino Bassi after the collapse of the great dome that had swept away a majority of the architectural structures. The current façade dates back to 1894. The basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence was built in the 4th century and was originally dedicated to Saint Ambrogio.It was renovated in the Romanesque period, in 1059, and then rebuilt in the 15th century following a design by Filippo Brunelleschi under the patronage of the Medici family.
